Story of Nin

What most clearly determines and connects the history of Nin with the present day is the fact that it was the first political, religious and cultural centre of Medieval Croatia. Nin is the oldest Croatian Royal Town and the place where the Croatian State was born, but its history goes much deeper than that!

As you can plainly see at every step, as well as in the Museum of Nin Antiquities, the small and proud town of Nin was once an important Roman municipality (Aenona), the most prominent under the Emperors Augustus and Tiberius. Nin’s grand and ancient history is not only evident in its numerous antique mosaics and imposing architectural remains, as Nin also fosters a centuries-old tradition of exceptional salt production. However, Nin is also a modern-day tourist destination that offers all types of activities for individuals and families alike, be it around exquisite sandy beaches and intimate lovely coves or in the utterly entertaining resorts of the highest quality.

SALT MUSEUM

History & Culture

Salt has been produced in Nin since Roman times and the local community is very proud of its traditional production according to the highest ecological standards.

About one hundred thousand yearly visitors of the onsite museum can learn more about unique salt production and buy souvenirs in its lovely gift shop.

Here you can find a wide range of salt products as well as taste and purchase the famous flower of salt, an exquisite delicacy considered by many as "the caviar of salt" and universally appreciated by the pickiest of gourmets around the globe. Those who work in the local saltworks take great pride in the fact that here salt is not produced by machines, but rather harvested directly from salt pans, which are shaped by the influence of the sun, sea and wind and enriched by diverse wildlife and nearby healing mud.

THE QUEEN'S BEACH

Sun & Beach

The Queen’s Beach is a 3-kilometre-long sandy beach, included on American Travel Channel’s list of the world’s most beautiful beaches!

Supposedly owing its name to the wife of the first King of Croatia (Tomislav), especially attracted to its beauty, this haven of the Nin Lagoon offers one of the most breath-taking views of Mount Velebit.

The shallow warm water and extending sand dunes of the beach are very favourable for families with small children and for people in need of therapeutic baths, as local pools have been used in treatment of various medical issues for over 50 years. For those who prefer a bit more action, coastal breezes make this part of the lagoon a quite good spot for windsurfing and local sand courts offer a chance for some fun beach volleyball. Apart from the Queen's Beach, Nin Riviera is known as the largest area of sandy beaches in Croatia!

THE CHURCH OF ST NICHOLAS

History & Culture

A famous symbol of Nin Riviera is St Nicholas Church, a 12th century Pre-Romanesque church very important for the dynasties of Croatian rulers.

The small fortress-like church was built in the late 11th century on the tumulus of a prehistoric Liburnian tomb, while its defence crown with 8 battlements was added in the 16th century during the Turkish attacks.

It is only 5.9 m long, 5.7 m wide and 6 m high and represents the only completely preserved example of the Pre-Romanesque architecture in Dalmatia. According to tradition, seven Croatian Kings were crowned in this unique church and each of them after the coronation had to ride to it with their escorts, where they would be presented to the people and as a sign of royal power in a symbolic ritual incise all four sides of the world with their swords. Besides enjoying the church’s colourful history and distinctive heritage, visitors can here observe an amazing sunset that will only add to their memorable experience!
